Pediatric Eye Exams in the Concord Area
We provide eye exams for infants, children, and teens in a calm, family-focused setting. Our goal is to help your child see comfortably at school, at home, and during activities, while keeping a close eye on long-term vision and eye health. Families from Concord, Clayton, Walnut Creek, and nearby communities trust us for steady, practical guidance as their children grow.
Children’s Eye Care with a Long-Term View
Many of the children we see start with us early and stay with the practice through their teen years. Exams are adapted to your child’s age and comfort level, whether it is a first visit with a baby or a school-age check before a new school year. We look at how well your child sees, how their eyes are working together, and whether anything could make reading, learning, or sports more difficult than it needs to be.
Infant & Early Childhood Eye Exams
Early eye exams can help us find concerns before they affect development or comfort.
We offer evaluations for infants, including InfantSEE visits, and tailor testing to your child’s age and ability to participate.
These visits focus on checking basic visual function, eye alignment, and how the eyes respond to light and objects.
For toddlers and preschoolers, we use simple, age-appropriate methods to assess vision and look for signs of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or eye turns that may need attention.
School-Age & Teen Eye Exams
As children enter school and their visual demands increase, regular exams become especially important.
For school-age children and teens, we check how clearly they see at distance and near, how their eyes focus and track, and whether they are experiencing strain with reading, screen time, or classroom work.
We also talk with parents and older children about symptoms such as headaches, squinting, or avoiding close work, and we factor these into our recommendations for glasses, contact lenses, or monitoring.
What We Evaluate During a Pediatric Exam
During a pediatric exam, we look beyond the basic eye chart. We measure vision at different distances, check eye alignment and focusing, and examine the front and back of the eyes to make sure structures are healthy.
When needed, we may use eye drops to measure a child’s prescription and assess the health of internal eye structures.
For many children, we also monitor patterns over time, comparing current findings with previous exams to see how vision and eye health are changing as they grow.
Myopia Management for Children
For children whose nearsightedness is progressing, we offer evidence-based options to help slow that change.
After a detailed exam and discussion, we may recommend MiSight® soft contact lenses, Stellest® spectacle lenses, or low-dose atropine eye drops, depending on your child’s age, prescription, and how they use their eyes day to day.
We explain how each option works, what kind of follow-up is involved, and what families can reasonably expect, so you can decide together on a plan that fits your child and feels manageable over time.
When to Schedule Your Child's Next Eye Exam
The right schedule for pediatric eye exams depends on your child’s age, medical history, and whether they already wear glasses or contacts. Younger children benefit from baseline exams before starting school and regular follow-up as they grow.
Children with known prescriptions, a family history of high myopia, or eye conditions may need to be seen more frequently.
If you notice changes in how your child sees the board at school, holds books or devices, or participates in activities, it is a good time to arrange a visit so we can take a closer look.
Parents commonly schedule pediatric exams for concerns such as:
- Squinting
- Sitting very close to the TV or computer
- Frequent headaches
- Difficulty seeing the board in class
